Reasons to work as an Infusion Nurse in California

Benefits of Working as a Nurse in California

Benefits of Working as a Nurse in California

Deciding to become an infusion nurse is one of the soundest career decisions any nurse can make.

Not only does the job provide great satisfaction and fulfillment, but it also provides many opportunities and potential financial security. Additionally, infusion nurses are in high demand, especially in certain parts of the country like California.

Why Work as an Infusion Nurse in California

California is known for its beautiful scenery and laid-back lifestyle. The state offers something for everyone! From great year-round weather, beautiful beaches, stunning woodlands, and mesmerizing desert locations, your time off is very well spent while working as a nurse in California.

Aside from its natural beauty, California has a strong economy and offers excellent work opportunities for nurses, including:

Higher Salary

California ranks as one of the highest paying state for nurses, according to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Even though the average salary for RN’s in California is above the nation’s median, nurses who provide specialized care, and those who are trained to provide biologic infusion care, have the potential to earn even more.

Work Schedules

Unlike nurses working for hospitals, infusion nurses in California who work at outpatient facilities such as in-office infusion suites, like those managed by Altus Infusion, have the added benefit of working a more traditional Monday – Friday, 9-5 work schedule.

Working in a private practice in-office biologic suite can provide nurses with a better work-life balance, allowing them to have a predictable and more typical work schedule.

High Demand

California employs one of the highest number of nurses in the nation, with over 290,000 nurses currently working in the state.

Despite a large number of nurses already working in the state, there is still a considerable shortage of registered nurses in California. A study by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) determined that the state will continue to suffer a shortage of qualified, licensed RN’s through the next decade.

This high demand means infusion nurses who are currently living in states like Florida, where there is a surplus of RN’s, can relocate to California and find excellent job opportunities working for reputable employers like Altus Infusion.

Special Considerations

It is worth noting that California is not part of the Nursing Licensure Compact. Therefore, any infusion nurse who wishes to relocate to California must apply for a separate California License with the California Board of Registered Nursing (CBRN).

The licensure process in California can take anywhere from 10 to 14 weeks. The state offers two methods of obtaining licensure:

Licensure by Examination: This method applies for nurses who are trying to receive their first RN license.

Licensure by Endorsement: This method is for nurses who already hold a valid RN license from another state.

All applicants must comply with the following prerequisites:

  • Hold a current and valid RN license. The RN license can be from another state, US territory, or Canada
  • Applicants need to complete an educational program that meets all California requirements
  • Pass the NCLEX-RN

More information on the licensure by endorsement application process can be found here

  • Temporary License: The California Board of Registered Nursing offers a temporary license for RN’s who already hold a valid nursing license from another state. The temporary permit is good for up to 6-months and is an excellent option for nurses who already have a job waiting for them in California, providing the opportunity to work while applying for a permanent license.
